South African motorcyclist Symons dies in accident at Dakar

Jan. 9, 2007
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

OUARZAZATE, Morocco -- Motorcyclist Elmer Symons died Tuesday in a crash at the Dakar Rally, race organizers said.

The 29-year-old South African was killed on the fourth stage from Er Rachidia to Ouarzazate in Morocco.

Organizers said Symons crashed about 142 kilometers (88 miles) into the stage. A medical team rushed to his aid by helicopter, but he was
pronounced dead. No further details were immediately given.

Symons, who was competing in his first Dakar after assisting on previous races, had been in 18th place overnight.

Deaths have long marred the African desert race.

Last year, 41-year-old Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott died after injuring his neck on the longest stage from Nouakchott to Kiffa in
Mauritania.

Two children were also killed -- in Guinea and Senegal -- after being hit by vehicles passing through packed desert villages.

Two years ago, 2001 and 2002 champion Fabrizio Meoni of Italy and Juan Manuel Perez of Spain, both motorcyclists with KTM, were killed.

A decision had not yet been taken by race director Etienne Lavigne on whether Wednesday's fifth stage would be canceled, or what kind of
memorial service would be held for Symons.

"There will be a briefing this evening when all the competitors get back," race spokesman Philippe Sudres said by telephone.

The Dakar is organized by the Amaury Sport Organization -- the owners of cycling's Tour de France -- and has been fraught with peril ever
since the first race was completed in 1979.

Three years later, Mark Thatcher, the son of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, got lost in the Sahara for a week when his car
broke down. During the 1991 rally, the driver of a support truck was shot dead in a village controlled by the Malian army.

In 1999, Sahara bandits robbed competitors at gunpoint in Mauritania. Wayward drivers veering off-route have even hit land mines left
over from the Morocco-Western Sahara war that ended in 1990.

Saharan nations even pledged thousands of troops to guard against possible terror attacks along a route that skirted the desert home
of Islamic extremists linked to al-Qaida.
